Why are we the forgotten ones?

21/02/2022

I find it quite remarkable that when we examine the impact of Covid 19 on the “Immuno-Compromised” we seem to focus all of our attention on those who are of a certain age. Yet, there is a cohort that is around 23% of our population and we do not seem to want to address the issues that they may deal with herein. This is the Disabled community.

This is despite the fact that the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) has clearly stated that people with disability are unduly impacted by health conditions and that in a pandemic they will be disproportionately at risk. Additionally, the DRC has indicated that people with disability have conveyed to them that they are concerned at being excluded from decision making and policy derivation in Australia.

The DRC acknowledges that state governments are including some people who are participants in the NDIS. However, the DRC goes on to point out that a significant number of people with disability are not participants in the NDIS. And as a consequence they are excluded from being heard.

Hopefully our policy makers will consider the issues people with disability deal with on a daily basis in a pandemic.
