I did write this to the Letters Editor at The West but as is customary he has ignored it!

I remain intrigued by the means by which we, in Australia, place a “value” on our fellow human beings. Sometimes this value is placed on the basis of a person’s race. Sometimes that value is on the basis of a person’s religion. Far too often that is on the basis of a person’s gender, sexual orientation or sexuality. None of these should matter one iota.
Intriguingly, since Covid started, our means of attributing value has shifted. Now it appears that “value” can only come about depending on the co-morbidities and disabilities we may have. All too often the rhetoric is in relation to the numbers of deaths due to Covid and goes along the lines of “they had co-morbidities any way”!
The presence of one or more co-morbidities is somehow seen as a reason for a person like myself (with a myriad co-morbidities) dying. This therefore justifies someone choosing not to vaccinate or not scanning their QR codes or not wearing a mask etc!
I hope that our rhetoric will change and we start to accept my life as being as “significant” as that of others in our community.
Yours faithfully
Suresh Rajan
