Three years ago the then Health Minister, now our Premier, wrote to us to say that they were implementing the Aishwarya Care Call system. That system would "improve on systems to enhance how families raise concerns for their children, as well as to create a staff culture which responds rapidly to families when they have heightened concern for their child's wellbeing".
Three years on Sandipan Dhar's parents constantly raised the issue of blood tests only to be refused at every stage. As we know from Josh Zimmerman’s article, this happened a number of times at a private GP clinic, and thrice at the Joondalup Health Campus. And a day or so after that last refusal, he died at the age of 21 months from Leukemia, a Blood Cancer.
This then raises all sorts of concerns about where private hospitals sit in our medical system as well as the powers of Government to mandate standards of care that should be meted out to members of the public in WA.
There is so much to play out from here. And so much has to be done by the current health minister to address these issues.
