Given the brouhaha about the former Prime Minister and his omnipresence in the Cabinet Ministerial stakes, this might be an opportune time for the Albanese government to nail its colours to the mast regarding representative government. Yes, the Government now needs to reform cabinet processes and procedures to ensure this type of despotic, Banana Republic type behaviour is not even possible to ever be considered or happen again.
However, as Greg Ross pointed out in his letter yesterday, the role of the Queen’s representative needs to be clearly examined. However, this anachronism will remain with us until the Minister for the Republic can bring his recommendations to the new government.
Therefore, whilst we are left with this position as a legacy, let us now appoint the first Aboriginal person to the position of Governor General. I can think of several very eminently suitable people to execute the duties of that position with aplomb.
