Today the Federal Dept. of Education released figures that showed that Australian universities made a record $5.3bn surplus during the Covid pandemic. This was at the same time as costs and employee benefits were cut.
The finance data revealed $38.9bn in revenue across the tertiary education sector in 2021, with all but three universities reporting a net surplus.
And yet the sector was positively mercenary in its scavenging attitude towards International Students in particular. They had absolutely no regard for the pastoral care of these students but were prepared to sacrifice them in their pursuit of the mighty dollar. We are now at the starting point of the next journey into rampaging excess as the new post Covid academic year commences. And Universities and other seats of learning have again been encouraged and assisted by governments to imperil the lives of these international scholars seeking knowledge and an elevation from a life of poverty in their home countries.
It is time now to harness the theft that is occurring in the name of education. Let us care for these International students appropriately.
