Yesterday we had the happy announcement of the impending birth of a child to Samantha Kerr and her partner Kristie Mewis. This news was communicated by Sam Kerr via her Instagram page. And soon thereafter the hate brigade, made up largely by religious bigots and fragile male egoists sprang into action.
To observe the vitriol being meted out to this young couple was horrendous and certainly unbecoming of a society that claims to have been founded on human rights principles. This vile commentary was primarily on the social media feeds of a number of media organisations. To its eternal credit your newspaper moderated the comments and brought back some semblance of civility to the commentary.
It is disappointing and depressing to think that only a short while ago, Samantha was very much the toast of every red-blooded Aussie. Now the worm has turned purely on an issue of her sexual preference. This highlights the shallow nature of some people’s thinking when matters of human rights are raised.
We can but hope that these Neanderthals of thought one day are sufficiently educated to understand that these are two human beings starting a family.
