The virus does not recognise ethnicity
Over the last 12 to 24 hours we have been inundated with media reporting of the backpacker in Perth who has tested positive for Covid 19. We also have every known expert, with knowledge largely based on intensive research on social media sites, spouting forth with things we should and should not have done in his case.
Of concern in this case and the other cases that we have seen in this State is the fact that there is a preoccupation on the part of media to identify the ethnicity of the person with the positive test result. Why is this even necessary?
All that this does is create a level of angst and anger towards a group of people. We did this previously, largely led by our own Premier in demonising one group from South Asia. This time we are shifting that focus.
I know with some certainty that the Virus does not discriminate between the ethnicities it impacts on.
